Midwinter's Night
Midwinter’s Night is a fantasy African poem set somewhere in the Sneeuberg mountains.
I based the text on Keats’ poem ‘The Eve of St Agnes’ and Sir Walter Scott’s ‘Lochivar’, and set it in Africa. On midwinter’s night a mysterious rider rescues the daughter of a chief on the eve of her wedding.
The poem uses alliterative verse, which is the kind that was used in Old English. Each line is divided into two parts, linked together with words beginning with the same letter. To read it, emphasize slightly the words which have the same letter.
